My life is forever changed...

I recently purchased a program that converts speech to text. Some of my regular readers no doubt know more about this technology than I do. However I am here to tell you that this is an amazing product and in fact I'm using it to dictate this blog right now. It has tripled my productivity at work... I just wish I had it when I was still in college. Anyway, I highly recommend it to anyone out there who find themselves having to type a lot. I have Dragon 9.0, and it only cost about $100. It has entirely changed my life. Seeing as this significantly decreases the amount of time it takes for me to blog perhaps I will blog with greater frequency. Anyway back to paperwork.

I played around with Dragon version 8 a couple of years ago while I was working in Huntsville (we were trying to develop some algorithms to smooth foreign accents in voice command programs for NATO multi-national systems, but it never went anywhere). I was surprised at how well it worked, but I never really got into it myself. Part of it is that I can actually type faster than I can speak. But mostly is that I just felt self-conscious and silly talking to my computer when I was alone in my office. I don't like talking to other people that much, so I certainly don't like talking when no one else is around.

Too bad we didn't have that program and a laptop during freshman year when we (well, mainly you and Dude) would ponder and pontificate upon the plethora of problems permeating the present populace. A purchase of this program would probably produce a penchant for penning prose to post on my personal page. Perhaps you could provide this poor peon the program's patronymic and place of purchase? (Sorry, I recently re-watched V for Vendetta and I was just in the mood for alliteration).

Wiley, think of it as talking to yourself, not your computer (talking to a machine is just weird). I know you aren't much of talker, but at least if you are talking to yourself you know you'll get an intelligent response.

I'm actually much more insecure about talking to my computer when somebody else is around. When I'm by myself it goes a lot smoother. Version 9 works really well. I only un in to poblems when I don't speak fast enough, so I usually have to think about what I'm going to say first, but I'm usually working from my handwritten session notes anyway, so it goes very quickly. I got it at Best Buy, it was displayed right near th anti-viral programs and like, microsoft office and stuff. I was never very fast at typing, but now technology is compensating for an issue caused by technology.
